DOGS SEASON ENDS :~(

The Bulldogs 1999 season has come to an abrupt end at the hands of the Melbourne Storm. Once again the oppostion was allowed first points when Marcus Bai crossed after 4 minutes Canterbury hit back via Rod Silva and tries were traded throughout the first half. Melbourne left the field 18-12 in front. However on return the Bulldogs were fired up and tries to Steven Hughes and Brent Sherwin resulted in them taking the lead 22-18. They had the match within grasp with minutes to go when a mis-directed kick from Ricky Stuart landed in the hands of Matt Geyer who streaked 85 metres to score. It was converted by former Canterbury player Craig Smith and, for the second time this season, the Storm 'pulled a Canterbury' on Canterbury and took the lead 24-22 which they held on to until the end

Canterbury have been quite inconsistent throughout the season but injuries have hit us hard this year and remember next season is only five months away :)

SEPTEMBER FORM RETURNS

The Bulldogs defence has reappeared in time for another of their famous charges to the grand final. The defence which has been lacking throughout the season surfaced to hold the attacking flair of Sydney City to only one try. The Roosters had many early opportunities but couldn't convert them.Canterbury, on the other hand, took their chances and, for only the fifth time all season, scored the first try through Brad Clyde. It was converted by Daryl Halligan who in doing so overtook Terry Lamb as highest pointscorer at Canterbury. A try late in the first half to Ivan Cleary gave the Sydney City an 8-6 lead at half time, but as we all know, this is the way the doggies like it. They came out in the second half fired up and an early try to Willie Talau set the game up. From there the Dogs out muscled the Roosters and walked away winners by 12-8

The victory sees the Dogs forced to play Melbourne at the SFS next Sunday. They are coming off a big loss to St George and are yet to prove themselves at finals football

UNLUCKY LOSS KNOCKS DOGS FROM TOP 4

The Bulldogs have been defeated by Brisbane by 14-12. It was a much better defensive effort from Cantebury letting in only two tries despite allowing Brisbane a greater share of the possession. The Broncos got to an early lead but a scrum win against the feed on the Brisbane line to Canterbury gave Rod Silva his 17th try of the year. The try was converted and score reamained 6-4 until halftime. Soon after the break Steve Price scored to give the dogs an eight point lead. Brisbane then took the unusual option of cutting the margin through penalties goals. Ben Walker brought the scores to 12-8 before a horrid bounce saw Wendell Sailor regather the ball and get it out to Peter Ryan who crossed. Walker converted it and the score remained 14-12.

This loss sees the dogs fall from the top four and it will mean we play Sydney City at the SFS next Friday

Also the tragic news that Travis Norton will be out for the season has forced Darren Smith to lock, with Troy Stone returning to the starting side

The team is as follows: 1. Rod Silva 2. Hazem El Masri 3. Steven Hughes 4. Willie Talau 5. Daryl Halligan 6. Corey Hughes 7. Ricky Stuart 13. Darren Smith 12. Bradley Clyde 11. Steve Price 10. TRAVIS OUT FOR SEASON TOO!

A finger injury to Travis Norton is likely to keep him sitting out the rest of the season. With Craig Polla Moutner and Jason Hetherington also out things are looking very grim to repeat last years efforts. It now becomes evident how lucky we were to gain Ricky Stuart, Brad Clyde and Darren Smith this season because without these class players I fear we would not have had the depth to be in semifinal contention.

August 15

DOGS AND PANTHERS GUTS OUT 22 ALL DRAW

The Bulldogs faced up to a determined Penrith outfit who, despite not having a semi final position play for, fought desperately with 15 men for much of the match. As per usual the dogs allowed their oppostion in for the first try. They then managed to take the lead at 12-6 but a coverted try to Penrith minutes before half time saw the panthers lead 16-12 at the break. Try scoring opportunities were traded in the second half until a Willie Talau try levelled the scores. Canterbury had a number of chances to take the match but failed to convert them

DOGS DOMINATE FIRST HALF THEN FALL ALSEEP

Canterbury have defeated the North Sydney Bears by 30 points to 18, however the dogs were leading 24-0 at half time. The try first came only 90 minutes into the game when Travis Norton took the ball from the hands of Matt Seers after a Ricky Stuart kick. He then mananged another kick for El Masri to dive and score. Rod Silva then crossed from a scum win. The next one resulted from a brilliant pass over the shoulder from El Masri to Darren Smith in which he fooled the oppsition by not even looking at Smith. Smith then scored in the corner 2 minutes before half time to give Canterbury what looked an unbeatable lead. After the break Norths came out fired up and scored four tries to bring the lead back to six. Jason Taylor had an unusual off day with the boot otherwise there may have been a different result. With 90 minutes to go El Masri crossed a second time to make the win a little more comfortable.

SCORING SPREE IN FINAL MINUTES TROUNCES WESTS

A 30 point haul in the final fifteen minutes has provided Canterbury with a major confidece boost leading into the final rounds of the competition. After two early tries to the Bulldogs, the Magpies fought back to level the scores at 12 a piece. Weak defence on Canterbury's behalf lead to opportunities for Wests to go ahead but they failed to capitalise and the dogs scored two more tries to lead 24-12 at half time.Wests then brought the score back to 26-16 but when Ken McGuinness cramped after taking an intercept they were finished and the flood gates opened.Daryl Halligan managed personal tally of 28 points, comming from two tries and 10 goals, equaled his own record set against the Gold Coast last season.

STILL UNBEATEN IN TOWNSVILLE

After a 30 points to 18 victory tonight, Canterbury remain unbeaten by North Queensland in Townsville since the Cowboys entered the competiton in 1995. It was a somewhat controversial win with the video ref disallowing a try to Noa Nandruku which would have brought the scores to 18-16 with a kick to come. Minutes later a linebreak by Glen Hughes, playing his 100th first grade game, sent El Masri over in the corner. It was converted to give the dogs a 24-12 lead. An AFL style take from Damien Smith brought the margin back to six but a try Dennis Scott, his first in the top grade, sealed the game for the Cantebury.

DALTON GONE FOR SEASON

Queensland representative hooker, Jason Hetherington, will be spending the remainder of the season on the side line. It was understood today that he would require surgery on his shoulder after sustaining an injury in Saturday nights match against Melbourne. With Hetherington and also Craig Polla-Mounter out of the side, Canterbury's premiership hopes diminish greatly although with the experience gained last year we should have the depth to cover them.

July 10

DOGS OUT OF MIRACLES

The Bulldogs have encountered their second defeat at their new home base, Stadium Australia, at the hands of the Melbourne Storm. After leading 8 points to 6 at halftime the Storm extended their lead to 24-8. Coverted tries to Steven Price, playing his 100th game for the club, and Hazem El Marsi brought the score back to 24-20 with 5 minutes to go. Hopes of yet a another miracle come back were dashed, however, when Ricky Stuart was caught in goal. The resulting line drop out was regained by Canterbury, but it had eaten precious seconds off the clock, not allowing the dogs the opportunity to get the necessary points.
